How to Install

GoogleHotKeys can be installed on Firefox 1.5 or later, and Internet Explorer 7.

To install on Firefox, go to the official Mozilla add-on page, and click the green install button. A dialog will come up, asking you if you want to install. Once the security countdown has finished, and the install button is no longer greyed out, click it. You'll then be asked to restart Firefox.

To install on Internet Explorer, download the Windows installer. You'll see a security dialog appear asking if you want to run this program, the exact wording depends on whether you're running XP or Vista. To install the add-on, you'll need to agree to run the installer. If you have any security concerns, you can check out my positive reviews, the checks that were done before the Firefox version could appear on the official website, and check the the source code yourself if you're a programmer. Once you've run the installer, you'll need to restart Internet Explorer.

Using Google Hot Keys

Once you've installed the add-on, go to http://google.com/ and do a web search. You should see the first link on the results page show up with a dotted rectangle around it. That box shows which link is currently selected.

Now press the down arrow on the keyboard. The selection box should move to the next link on the page. If you keep pressing it, and get to the last link on the page, the next press should take you to the following page of results.

Press the return key when you're on a link that looks promising. This will go to the page the link points to.

If you want to browse through the results easily, press the P key to go into split-screen preview mode. This will show the currently selected page in the right half of the window.

If you want to temporily turn off GoogleHotKeys, hold down the control key and then press the / (forward slash) button. This will toggle the extension on and off.
